Life in Rural Calhoun County
-by Rob Lyerla, 1st Vice Chair CCDP
Living in a rural area has come with a few surprises I hadn’t anticipated. It appears, for example, that the loudest voice on rural issues seems to be the Farm Bureau, despite the fact that less than 1% of all rural residents are farmers. Healthcare access, broadband access, education, jobs, infrastructure-- these issues are important to us, and to our neighbors, whether we live in a rural area or a city.
During the last election, here in Michigan rural voters moved toward the Democrats by roughly 3%. In fact, closer looks at our voting tallies from Calhoun County suggest that there are thousands of voters in rural areas who vote as Democrats.
