No Excuses
by CCDP Vice Chairwoman Nancy Macfarlane
Voting. Why bother. Excuses abound. Like? One vote doesn't make a difference. Or, they are all corrupt. Worse yet; the weather, I'm too busy, it's inconvenient.
We live in a participatory Democracy, which emphasizes the broad participation of constituents in the direction and operation of its political systems. That didn't come easy for many people. The only people guaranteed a right to vote from the start were property owning white males, which in 1789 was 6% of the population. And currently, there are too many Republicans that would like to take away our voting rights -- the rights that took over 200 years to get!
Freed male slaves got the right to vote in 1870. Native Americans who were willing to disassociate themselves from their tribe by the Dawes Act, became eligible to vote in 1887. Women got the right to vote in 1920. In 1964, the 24th Amendment prohibited poll taxes and in 1965 voting protections were put in place to protect minorities. Our system isn't perfect, but the only way to create the country we desire is by voting.
Laws can be made; laws can be changed. Who we elect makes a difference. The Democratic Party will not put candidates into office unless Democrats vote. It's that simple. No excuses.
Vote. Always vote at every opportunity.
